On this last day of February, I remind myself that tomorrow is the start of a brand new month! A whole new month’s worth of brand new possibilities. And thats how I choose to look at it.
In a world that seems currently off its axis with strange and challenging things happening completely outside of my control I’m consciously striking out to create my own reality. This is not a new concept. We all have to ability to choose how we see things.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” – Victor Frankl
We can harness the power of our thoughts and intentions to create our world. As we navigate our daily lives and the challenges that arise, it’s important to remember that our perspective shapes our reality. In the words of Stephen R. Covey,
“We do not see the world as it is, but as we are.”
This powerful insight reminds us that our thoughts and emotions colour our experiences. By consciously choosing how we think and feel, we can shape our environments to reflect our true selves and aspirations. Every thought we choose to have and every design choice we make is an extension of our inner world.
The Connection Between Thought and Environment
In metaphysics, there’s a powerful notion: our thoughts shape our experiences. When applied to interior design, this means that the spaces we create can reflect and reinforce our aspirations, emotions, and overall well-being. When we intentionally design our home environments and what we focus our thoughts on, we set the stage for our realities.
Creating a Reality Through Design
Intention Setting: Before embarking on any design project be it an entire home or just a small reading nook, take a moment to visualize your desired outcome. What do you want to feel in the space? By setting clear intentions, you create a foundation for your design choices.
Color Psychology: By now everyone knows colours influence our emotions and perceptions. But how do we consciously apply this in our lives? Incorporating colours that resonate with your intentions can enhance your mood and energy. For instance, did you know grey tones can promote tranquility because your eyes don’t work too hard when you take in shades of grey? While vibrant yellows can inspire creativity, combine them with pink and you have the happiest combination for an uplifting space.
Mindful Arrangement: The layout of your space can affect how you feel. Consider the flow of energy in your rooms. Arrange furniture to facilitate movement and connection, creating an inviting atmosphere that nurtures positive interactions. Bumping into things, hitting that tiny toe on chair legs and table corners is a clear indication that something isn’t working. When energy and people can flow freely and encumbered through a space harmony follows.
Symbolic Decor: Use decor items that hold personal significance or represent your aspirations. Whether it’s artwork that inspires you or objects that evoke positive memories, these elements serve as daily reminders of your intentions.
We’re taught that “things don’t matter”, “don’t be a hoarder”, “material possessions mean nothing at the end of the day”. The truth is, they do matter and it matters a lot what you keep in your space and for what reason. Objects remind us of specific people in our lives and how they made us feel or of places and what transpired. Choose objects wisely, keep only those that bring you joy. Marie Condo is not wrong!
Embrace Nature: Incorporating natural elements into your design can ground you and promote a sense of peace. I saw a post on Instagram that said that in Japan a study was done and they found that caring for something like plants – that don’t give damn if you exist or not – gives you a feeling of inner peace. Well, if this is true or not, I believe it. I count gardening under one of my very few (not so often practiced!) all time relaxing hobbies.
As we navigate our daily lives and the challenges that arise, it’s important to remember that our perspective shapes our reality. Once again, I’m left thinking of the words of Stephen R. Covey, ‘We do not see the world as it is, but as we are.’ Every design choice we make allows us to create a sanctuary that nurtures our spirit.
Transform Your Space, Transform Your Life. Let’s embark on this journey together, transforming our thoughts into tangible realities through the art of interior design.
